  1. Exactly what mechman said I don't need and idle amps cause thus will be charging a separate battery bank at 18v my stock alt is more than sufficient to support my stock electronics and 2 100.4s at 12v

Cj you need to stop posting just for a reason to bash mechman

I am in no way bashing mechmans products and never have. That is another time and place. I simply stated the fact that this unit only does 40a at idle. If you are using this as a secondary alt to charge your 16v batteries, is this going to be a burp only setup where you always have the RPMs run up?

Mechman came in and stated that this is a SPL unit built to be run at RPMs 1500 or higher and I understand that but it just would not suit my purposes. I like to be able to get out of the truck while it is playing or at least not have to worry about keeping my foot on the gas while demoing.

Now a 400a unit that does 240+ at idle would definitely interest me.

If you want to jump my case for bashing something, make sure that is what I am actually doing before you open your mouth.

its not a burp only vehicle but i dont ever plan on being out of the vehicle while its playing and i def wouldnt on full tilt i might get out on moderate volume but having 10 batteries is sufficient enough to support that for short periods

  2. i added a 3 wire alt to my truck just a few weeks ago, i did one straight to battery then got a resistor from radio shack and ran that wire to the ignition and the other one to a power distribution block and it is charging 14.4 now. you can google it and find wiring diagrams for alts and you can also put GM alt on a ford

Ok, but do you absolutely need to use the other outputs on the alt if it's a secondary alt? Also, I'm not trying to replace the original alt in my truck, it's only a few days old.

yes you need to use all wires for it to charge not unless you get a 1 wire alternator

    not true

yes this is possible i am doing this exact thing on my truck i have a '91 c1500 and i am putting a 400a mechman alt on it as a secondary for an 18v system but the new alt is for a new body style truck with the ls based engine call mechman and they can hook you up proper you just need a single one wire turn on lead and you are golden

  4. i saw the thread on the GM blowout and i couldnt pass it up i placed an order that day for a 400a unit and bam 2 days later its in my hands at first i was concerned because the dyno label said it only did 165a at idle and 274a at full output so i made a call (very friendly by the way) and it turns out there was just a mixup with the labeling and my alt is completely fine i cant wait to put it in if i ever need a second 400a unit :peepwall: i wont hesitate at all to hit up mechman

    thanks guys

    400a of greatness
